Maybe Pink Isn’t Just a Color

Maybe pink isn’t just a color. Maybe it’s a feeling.

Lately, we’ve been surrounded by it. Here on the farm, we’re right in the middle of protea season—mostly the pink varieties, like Pink Ice. And there’s something about seeing them harvested and brought in from the field that never gets old.

They’re bold, sculptural, and unmistakable. We often associate pink with affection, tenderness, gratitude, and love. But peering into a truck filled with pink blooms, I find myself thinking about something much simpler: how a color can change the feeling of a moment.

Not only do I enjoy seeing our trucks filled with freshly harvested proteas, I love seeing them transformed into beautiful bouquets. What feels wild and rugged out in the field can suddenly feel soft, romantic, and almost delicate.

After spending so many years living and working on a protea farm, I’m reminded again and again that flowers have a way of saying things we sometimes can’t.

They can say thank you. I love you. I’m thinking of you.

Or sometimes, simply: Look at this.

Maybe that’s what I love most about pink proteas. The color invites you to slow down and soften for a moment. And right now, as we move through the season, I’m happy to be surrounded by lots of pink

Maybe pink isn’t just a color after all.

Maybe it’s a feeling.

Protea Care Tips: How to Keep These Stunning Blooms Looking Their Best

The demand for Protea is at an all-time high… and it’s easy to see why. With their sculptural beauty, sturdy stems, and impressively long vase life, Protea make exceptional cut flowers for both fresh and dried arrangements.

Native to South Africa, Protea thrive in sunny conditions and love a little sweetness in their water. Popular varieties such as Kings, Queen Pink Ice and Neriifolia continue to be florist favorites thanks to their dramatic appearance and durability.

One of the biggest misconceptions about Protea is that they are tropical flowers. In reality, they are Mediterranean flowers, which means they actually perform very well in floral coolers and refrigerators… especially during warm summer months.

Simple Tips for Longer-Lasting Protea

Unpack Immediately

As soon as your flowers arrive, remove them from their packaging to allow proper airflow and hydration.

Recut the Stems

Trim up to ½ inch from each stem and remove any foliage that would sit below the waterline.

Store Cool — With Light

Protea prefer to rest in a well-lit cooler or refrigerator between 43–50°F. Unlike many flowers, Protea actually benefit from having the light on while stored.

Remove Excess Leaves

Removing a few leaves around the bloom helps showcase the flower’s natural structure and beauty. Some Protea varieties are prone to leaf blackening, even with excellent post-harvest care. If the bloom itself looks healthy and fresh, simply remove the affected leaves.

Add Flower Food or Sugar

Use floral preservative whenever possible or add a teaspoon of sugar to the water to help extend vase life.

Keep Water Levels High

Protea are surprisingly thirsty flowers, so check water levels frequently and refill as needed.

Avoid Direct Sunlight

While Protea love sunshine in nature, cut blooms last longer when kept out of direct sunlight indoors.

Beauty That Lasts Beyond Fresh Flowers

With proper care, Protea can last for weeks in a vase. And the beauty doesn’t stop there — they dry exceptionally well, retaining much of their structure, texture, and even color. Whether displayed in dried arrangements, wreaths, or permanent botanical installations, Protea offer a timeless, architectural elegance that few flowers can match.

Embracing the Season: Pink Ice

As summer’s heat begins to wane, a transformation is unfolding in our fields. Protea season is on the horizon, and with it comes a surge of Pink Ice that tout the end of summer and the beginning of fall. For us, this season is more than just a change in weather—it’s a time of rejuvenation, and a chance to reconnect with this exquisite protea.

The start of protea season is marked by a subtle yet profound shift. The days grow shorter, the sun’s rays take on an autumn glow, and gradually, the fields awaken from their summer slumber. Pink Ice is typically the first protea to kick off the season producing a wave of, silvery-pink buds and blooms a top the long sturdy stems. These hardy and resilient flowers are barometers of fall, signaling the start of another harvest.

If you’re inspired to bring a bit of protea allure to your designs, Pink Ice is the perfect choice. It’s one of the hardiest and most abundant plants on our farm! And… the blooms? They’re stunning no matter how you arrange them. They mingle beautifully with banksia and pincushions as well as flowers like roses, lisianthus and Sea Holly, and they’re also lovely arranged and displayed on their own.

Proper flower care is KEY in keeping your Pink Ice looking fresh for as long as possible! Here’s our top tips to keep your blooms looking and feeling their best! :

  • Unpack the flowers immediately.
  • Cut up to 1/2 inch off the stems and remove leaves that will end up in the water.
  • Store flowers in a well-lit floral (proteas prefer to rest with the light on) cooler or refrigerator between 43-50 Fn.
  • Removing a few leaves around the flower head will enhance the flower display. Note, some proteas are prone to leaf blackening and even with the best post-harvest care, it can still happen. So, if the flower looks fresh and healthy to you, just remove those leaves as well.
  • Use a flower preservative or a teaspoon of sugar for added longevity.
  • Check water levels frequently as proteas get very thirsty.
  • Keep them out of direct sunlight whenever possible.
  • Pink Ice can last weeks in a vase. Then, they don’t die… they dry beautifully! Many Proteas retain their structural design and to some extent their color. When used in dried flower arrangements or wreaths, they are as permanent as almost anything the botanical world provides.

As we embrace the start of Pink Ice season, let’s take a moment to appreciate the joys that come with it. The sight of the flowers, and their colors are reminders of the beauty that surrounds us. Whether you’re a professional designer or simply enjoy playing with flowers, Pink Ice offers a wonderful opportunity to connect with the world of proteas in a creative way.

Fall’s Fabulous Flush

It takes just a peek out in the fields to remind us that fall has, indeed, made its way to this side of the equator. I always find that the sky is prettiest in the autumn, it seems to take on a warm golden glow that reminds me of the word ‘harvest’. That awareness as nature yields its final flush and soon the fields will begin anew - is always a hint to take pause and reflect.

There’s something so magical about this time of the year. The bountiful plants standing tall with blooms reaching high into the autumn sky, protea by the arm loads gathered into glorious bundles and pickups overflowing with the day’s yield. Fall’s fabulous flush is a cause for celebration and the ideal time to share the ambiance of the season harvest. Each gorgeous protea transforms everyday life here on the farm — growing, harvesting, and even transporting—into works of art.

Festive Fall Designs

When it comes to the changing of the seasons, there's nothing more stirring than when summer fades into fall. We transition into the cooler weather with rich, saturated colors and riveting textures. These warmer hues often play up the excitement of the season; plus, falling temps means we all have an excuse to bring ‘more’ of nature indoors. Fall is a time for all of these things, and for Protea (especially Pink Ice), making it the ideal time to let the autumn vibes flow with captivating festive designs.

Turning an ordinary arrangement into a ‘seasonal gathering’ is as easy as focusing on the accents you're bringing into it. Are you adding colors into your design that creates a warm and inviting aura? Concentrate, on the elements needed to achieve the look from Protea, Banksia and Grevillea, to Leucadendron and other fabulous fall foliage. How can you add an extra texture to the centerpiece?

In this season of abundance, there are so many wonderful options. You’ll also want to be sure to make full use of those richly colored fruit that flourish during this time of the year. Persimmons, pomegranates, apples or any other produce can be added to the arrangement or simply displayed off to the side to deliver more of an autumnal ambiance, while bringing even more nature inside to enjoy.
