Banksia Baxteri: A bloom with a Tropical Twist 🌿🍈

In the sun-drenched landscapes of southwestern Australia, nature has crafted some of its most dazzling Banksia. Among them is baxteri, commonly known as Bird’s-Nest Banksia, Baxter’s Banksia, and in Hawaii, it has the nickname “Summer Lime”.

This banksia turns heads with its bright lime-green cylindrical spikes that bloom in summer. Each inflorescence is composed of thousands of tiny flowers arranged in a compact cluster. Baxteri’s leaves are leathery, deeply serrated, and arranged in whorls around the branches, adding to its full, rounded shape.

Another wonderful attribute is baxteri's incredible longevity as both a cut flower and as part of dried arrangements. Whether you’re arranging a centerpiece or creating a large floral display, the lime-green hue and textured shape of the bloom lends an artistic touch to any design. When used as the focal point, baxteri draws the eye and adds dramatic flair to arrangements.

Designing with Protea Venus

Protea Venus is here to sweeten your Valentine’s Day with its radiant red blooms. This relatively new species, with its striking appearance and bold character, is quickly becoming a favorite among designers. Known for its impressive size, delicate yet strong flower bracts, and dramatic color, it brings an exotic touch to any design project. Whether you're creating a floral arrangement or styling an event, this beautiful protea offers endless creative possibilities.

Before diving into design ideas, it's important to understand what makes Venus so unique. This protea is a South African-developed hybrid that’s a mix of aristata and repens (sugarbush). Venus stands out with its rich, red bracts tipped in white, soft, red central dome and long straight stems.
 

Here are a few ways we've incorporated it into designs.

Proteas and Pumpkins Pair Perfectly

Oh, my GOURD! I don’t mean to scare you, but Halloween is just around the corner. Creating an arrangement using a pumpkin and proteas is a delightful way to celebrate the holiday and the season. While we typically associate pumpkins with Halloween, they are suitable for so much more. Left whole, they can sit at many angles to give everyone at the table a beautiful view. These shapely gourds are a symbol of abundance, and when cut open, they make perfect containers for fabulous fall flowers.

Ready to 'treat' yourself and make your own gourd-geous centerpiece?

Choose a pumpkin with a fresh, healthy stem, no bruises, and a flat bottom so it won't roll. Cut off the top and set it off to the side. Scoop out all the seeds and pulp. Place a block of floral foam in water and wait until it is completely saturated. Then insert the foam inside the pumpkin, leaving just a few inches between the top surface of the foam and the rim. Insert flowers and foliage directly into the foam, working all around the perimeter of your pumpkin. In my design, I chose a mix of proteas, grevillea flowers, everlastings, amaranths, Australian pine, eucalyptus and a textural lotus pod.

Spring Protea Pairings

Ready to add allure to your day and seasonal decor? You're in luck. With Leucospermum ‘pincushions’ turning a centerpiece into mesmerizing display is a breeze. Especially right now as they’re zooming into bloom, and there's so many amazing varieties to choose from. This arrangement features Sunrise that flaunts two lovely shades of orange, and Tango that boasts a bend of red and orange. Both pincushions pair perfectly with protea Nitida and Grandicolor, the textural banksia and vibrant flowering Leucadendron. And, for a playful touch, a few stems of yellow Grevillea flowers and Ivanhoe are mingled into the fushion.

The results make for a vivacious centerpiece with a tropical-feel and put a spring-ready twist on these amazing proteas. The orange and neutral shade palette adds a sense of softness that resonates with springtime and the new beginnings.

Materials

• Leucospermum ‘pincushion’ Sunrise and Tango 
• Banksia Candles and Integrifolia 
• Protea Grandicolor

Steps

1. Create a tape grid across the top of your vase using waterproof floral tape. 
2. Begin designing your arrangement by creating a base of the eucalyptus Parvifolia foliage. 
3. Continue to build the base by adding Grevillea Ivanhoe. 
4. Once you have a nice base and shape, insert the pincushions. Make sure to cut the stems at an angle to allow maximum water absorption. 
5. Next, insert the protea and banksia randomly around the arrangement. 
6. Add color and a new texture with the yellow Grevillea flowers and Leucadendron.

Red, White & Blue Centerpieces

Beautiful centerpieces are a lot like wonderful guests. They add a festive ambiance, lure the eye, and spark interesting and inspiring conversations. With the summer’s abundance of fabulous florals, fruited stems and branches, anyone can easily assemble an arrangement that's dynamic, alluring, unexpected… and it might even become the talk of the table.

Consider hosting a 4th of July gathering and set the scene with a colorful arrangement fashioned with gorgeous proteas and array of other fabulous flowers and foliage. The good old red, white and blue is a classic color combination that will never go out of style, especially if you're gathering is on the 4th of July. Take the arrangement pictured above, for instance: The patriotic color scheme is vibrant and cheerful and the basket conveys a picnic vibe which is perfect for the occasion.

One of the best ways to get inspiration for centerpieces is to look to your table settings and consider the food you plan to serve… they can all kindle great ideas. You could echo the blue in a tablecloth or incorporate the same fruit you use as a garnish on desert.

CGCI Floral Design Forum

As a protea lover and passionate flower farmer, whenever I have the time, I enjoy sharing my knowledge of this amazing family of flowers and foliage with floral enthusiasts and gardeners. There’s so much to learn about the 73 genera and more than 1500 species in the Protea family. Plus, the cultivation of proteas is always an important and fascinating topic.

I’m equally excited to show flower lovers and gardeners how you can create stunning works of art with proteas. During this month’s California Garden Club (CGCI) Floral Design Forum, I had the opportunity to immerse their members in the beauty of designing with proteas. I created six seasonal arrangements using an array of proteas, plus some eucalyptus foliage, fruited branches, and Australian wildflowers along with a few bunches of ranunculus and anemone from our local farmer’s market. I love demonstrating how beautiful proteas are when displayed alone or mixed with more traditional florals.

This simple hand-tied bouquet is a lovely mix of proteas, berzelia, waxflower and eucalyptus foliage.

Mixing fruit branches into designs is alway a hit. The kumquats in this arrangement added texture and a pop of color. The ranunculus provide a delicate spring feel, and the proteas take the design to the next level.

A foam wreath frame is the base of this peach hued candle centerpiece with pincushions, ranunculus, calycina, Grevillea, Leucadendron, berzelia and eucalyptus.

My version of a floral Easter basket filled with plenty of colorful proteas, eucalyptus, calycina and blue anemone plus a grapevine handle to top it off.

Door décor provides a ‘cheery welcome’ especially during spring holidays. The grapevine frame is lined with moss and a piece of floral foam. Camellia leaves surround the base and proteas, eucalyptus + peach blossoms adorn the basket.

Spooktacular Pumpkin Art

The vibes your autumn decor gives off depends entirely on what you pair them with. While we typically associate pumpkins with Halloween, they are suitable for so much more. Left whole, they can sit at many angles to give everyone at the table a beautiful view. Cut open, they make excellent containers for flowers when hollowed out. While most popular in hues of orange, white and green, pumpkins offer wonderful options for color schemes, especially when they are paired with protea and other unique botanicals.

Simplely Gourd-geous!

Here is what you need to make your own:

• Fresh pumpkin 

• Knife 

• Clear plastic sheet or container 

• Chicken wire or Floral foam (optional) 

• Flowers, foliage, berries, cones, fruit 

• Clippers 

• Spray paint (optional)

Make it!

Carve your pumpkin so that you have a wide opening near the center of the pumpkin. Scoop out the seeds and pulp. Line the inside of the pumpkin with a sheet of plastic or container. If desired, cut a piece of floral foam with the knife to fit inside the pumpkin. Choose flowers and foliage with strong straight stems (proteas are perfect)! Insert the chicken wire or pre-soaked floral foam into the pumpkin and create your arrangement. Start with foliage, then add flowers, fruit, and other embellishments to create a full and interesting centerpiece.
