Proteas: The Colors of the Seasons

As one season slowly slips into the next… nature paints the transition with a shift in colors. While many plants retreat into dormancy through winter and early spring, Leucospermum… affectionately known as "pincushions", burst forth in a blaze of color, lighting up the fields with their unmistakable vibrance. Their fiery reds, bold oranges, and glowing yellows cut through the cool season gloom like living embers, offering a show that’s both dramatic and uplifting. Each flower head, with its unique pin-like projections, resembles a brilliant sunburst… a perfect fusion of geometry and wild beauty.

Then as summer and fall approach, a new palette begins to emerge. The Protea bloom in soft pinks, creamy whites, and deep burgundies, each wrapped in velvety bracts that feel as luxurious as they look. Their blooms feel richer, echoing the slower rhythm of the warmer months and the shifting tones of the fields. These flowers don’t shout; they resonate… rich, textural, and timeless. Where pincushions danced with spring’s energy, protea settle into the season’s grounded warmth, echoing the golden light of late afternoon.

A beautiful reminder: our harvest is always moving, always changing. And with each bloom, the colors we gather tell the story of where we are in the year. 🍃💥🌷🍂

Spring Ready

In like a lion, out like a lamb, March is a month of change and revival. The days grow longer and lighter and our souls tend to follow suit as well. We ‘spring forward’ on March 12th and then set our sights on the 20th, the first day of spring.

This winter has been one for the record books in California when it comes to rainfall. So far, we’ve broken records for any 22-day period between October to January. Parts of the state have seen over 20 inches of rain to-date (and still growing) but that number has a long way to go to beat 1982-1983 which totaled nearly 43 inches.

The nearby mountain tops are snow packed surrounding our valley in a winter wonderland. While spring may still be a little over three weeks away, we’re ready to begin the seasonal transition into Leucospermum season. With even brighter hues and plenty of texture… we’re 'Spring-Ready' or perhaps better said ‘Pincushion Ready' even though winter is still rampaging through the fields like a lion.

There has rarely been a better time for spring’s arrival. As the 19th-century writer Harriet Ann Jacobs noted “when nature resumes her loveliness, the human soul is apt to revive also.”

Autumn Bliss

When it comes to the changing of the seasons, there's nothing more stirring than when summer dwindles into fall. We transition into the cooler autumn weather with soothing colors and riveting textures. These warmer hues often play up the excitement of the season; plus, falling temps means we all have an excuse to bring ‘more’ of nature indoors. Fall is a time for all of these things, and for harvesting protea (especially Pink Ice), making it the ideal time to let the autumn vibes begin with festive floral designs.

Turning an ordinary arrangement into a ‘seasonal gathering’ is as easy as focusing on the accents you're bringing into it. Are you adding colors into your design that creates a warm and inviting aura? Concentrate, on the elements needed to achieve the look from protea, banksia and grevillea, to Leucadendron and other fabulous fall foliage. How can you add an extra texture to the centerpiece?

In this season of abundance, there’s so many wonderful options. You’ll also want to be sure to make full use of those richly colored fruit that flourish during this transition from autumn into winter. Persimmons, pomegranates, apples or any other produce can be added to the arrangement or simply displayed off to the side to deliver more of an autumnal ambiance + while bringing even more nature inside to enjoy.
