Maybe pink isn’t just a color. Maybe it’s a feeling.

Lately, we’ve been surrounded by it. Here on the farm, we’re right in the middle of protea season—mostly the pink varieties, like Pink Ice. And there’s something about seeing them harvested and brought in from the field that never gets old.

They’re bold, sculptural, and unmistakable. We often associate pink with affection, tenderness, gratitude, and love. But peering into a truck filled with pink blooms, I find myself thinking about something much simpler: how a color can change the feeling of a moment.

Not only do I enjoy seeing our trucks filled with freshly harvested proteas, I love seeing them transformed into beautiful bouquets. What feels wild and rugged out in the field can suddenly feel soft, romantic, and almost delicate.

After spending so many years living and working on a protea farm, I’m reminded again and again that flowers have a way of saying things we sometimes can’t.

They can say thank you. I love you. I’m thinking of you.

Or sometimes, simply: Look at this.

Maybe that’s what I love most about pink proteas. The color invites you to slow down and soften for a moment. And right now, as we move through the season, I’m happy to be surrounded by lots of pink

The Allure of Sugarbush in Floral Designs

When it comes to creating floral arrangements, few flowers capture the imagination quite like the Protea repens or more commonly called Sugarbush. With its unique open, funnel-shaped blooms, vibrant colors, and textured foliage, this striking flower is a chic choice for floral fans and designers alike. Originating from the fynbos region of South Africa, the Sugarbush is more than just a beautiful protea; it embodies a spirit of natural elegance that can elevate any arrangement.

Proteas and Pumpkins Pair Perfectly

Oh, my GOURD! I don’t mean to scare you, but Halloween is just around the corner. Creating an arrangement using a pumpkin and proteas is a delightful way to celebrate the holiday and the season. While we typically associate pumpkins with Halloween, they are suitable for so much more. Left whole, they can sit at many angles to give everyone at the table a beautiful view. These shapely gourds are a symbol of abundance, and when cut open, they make perfect containers for fabulous fall flowers.

Ready to 'treat' yourself and make your own gourd-geous centerpiece?

Choose a pumpkin with a fresh, healthy stem, no bruises, and a flat bottom so it won't roll. Cut off the top and set it off to the side. Scoop out all the seeds and pulp. Place a block of floral foam in water and wait until it is completely saturated. Then insert the foam inside the pumpkin, leaving just a few inches between the top surface of the foam and the rim. Insert flowers and foliage directly into the foam, working all around the perimeter of your pumpkin. In my design, I chose a mix of proteas, grevillea flowers, everlastings, amaranths, Australian pine, eucalyptus and a textural lotus pod.

The vibes your autumn decor gives off depends entirely on what you pair them with. While we typically associate pumpkins with Halloween, they are suitable for so much more. Ready to make your own?

In my design, I chose a mix of proteas, grevillea flowers, spray roses, zinnias, chrysanthemum, calla lilies, beautyberry, hanging amaranths, green kumquats, pomegranate, Australian pine, and eucalyptus.

Firewood Banksia - Menziesii

Discover the mesmerizing allure of the rugged and yet stunning Banksia menziesii! The flower spike is showy and vibrant, wine-red that becomes mingled with yellow as the bloom matures, and set against a backdrop of chic, twisted grey-green leaves… it’s captivating.

Menziesii is also referred to as Port Wine Banksia or Raspberry Frost due to its amazing color and Firewood Banksia due to its quick burning properties. It typically blooms during autumn and into winter. Each spike is composed of up to 6,000 individual flowers, and yet only a few become filled with seeds. The seeds are enclosed in sacs attached to an indestructible cone until it’s burnt.

This spectacular banksia is thought to have a special flower essence. Australian Aboriginal people would use menziesii in their rituals and ceremonies for its healing capabilities for courage. Courage to help one release pain and to move ahead triumphantly, with renewed energy. This flower essence parallels with The Language of Flowers and the symbol of Protea - Diversity and Courage.

Whether flaunted alone or showcased with other florals, menziesii never fails to put on an amazing display.

Festive Fall Designs

When it comes to the changing of the seasons, there's nothing more stirring than when summer fades into fall. We transition into the cooler weather with rich, saturated colors and riveting textures. These warmer hues often play up the excitement of the season; plus, falling temps means we all have an excuse to bring ‘more’ of nature indoors. Fall is a time for all of these things, and for Protea (especially Pink Ice), making it the ideal time to let the autumn vibes flow with captivating festive designs.

Turning an ordinary arrangement into a ‘seasonal gathering’ is as easy as focusing on the accents you're bringing into it. Are you adding colors into your design that creates a warm and inviting aura? Concentrate, on the elements needed to achieve the look from Protea, Banksia and Grevillea, to Leucadendron and other fabulous fall foliage. How can you add an extra texture to the centerpiece?

In this season of abundance, there are so many wonderful options. You’ll also want to be sure to make full use of those richly colored fruit that flourish during this time of the year. Persimmons, pomegranates, apples or any other produce can be added to the arrangement or simply displayed off to the side to deliver more of an autumnal ambiance, while bringing even more nature inside to enjoy.
