Welcoming the Chamelaucium: The Start of Waxflower Season in California

Like clockwork… just before the winter solstice, we’re seeing first hints of spring begin to grace the fields, one of our favorite seasons is upon us: Chamelaucium season! This aromatic beauty, often referred to as waxflower, bursts onto the scene with a delightful array of colors and fragrances that signal the arrival of a new season.

Originating from Australia, these delicate, cup-shaped accent flowers ranging in hues from soft pinks, whites to deep purples and even bi-colors. Beyond their aesthetic appeal, waxflowers are also cherished for their unique waxy petals, which create a stunning visual while providing longevity in floral designs.

Waxflowers typically begin their bloom in early winter and continue to flourish through the spring, making January to June a particularly delightful time for designers. As temperatures rise, we see a flourishing of color across the fields. The warmer inland valley provides ideal growing conditions for these resilient plants.

Whether used as the star of the show or simply mingled in mixed bouquets, waxflowers bring a fresh, earthy scent and texture that’s simply irresistible. Anigozanthos – Kangaroo Paws

Colorful and unique, kangaroo paws are an Australian Icon which have become famed the World over! Vibrant flowers perch on long stems adding color to the garden and attracting birds. And they also make superb cut flowers!

Anigozanthos (pronounced an-ih-go-zan-thos) or more commonly known as kangaroo paws produce clusters of fuzzy tubular blossoms that do indeed resemble kangaroo toes. The size of the flowers, stem length and color vary depending on the species and cultivar. The coarse hairs growing around kangaroo paw flowers and their stems determine their eventual color. Weather also plays a role in color variation. In cooler climates, kangaroo paws will develop more intense colors. Some kangaroo paws can grow over 6 feet in height!

Because of their novel appearance, kangaroo paws are used to symbolize uniqueness and individuality.

Post-Harvest Care:

• Select well-branched stems with some of the flowers open. Flowers should display clean, vibrant color. Avoid stems with limp flowers or browning petal tips. 
• When processing, strip foliage that falls below the water line. Recut stems about ¼” at an angle (45-degrees) and hydrate them in water for about five hours before use in designs. 
• Stems can be re-cut under running water or in a bowl of clean water. Cutting under water may reduce the risk of air pockets forming at the stems’ base and allows the flowers to absorb water right away. 
• Kangaroo paws are also heavy drinkers, so good hydration is essential when processing and designing.

For the Love of Waxflower

Waxflower season is upon us, and with it comes an abundance of those beloved fragrant flowers. Belonging to the Chamelaucium genus of shrubs and stemming from the myrtle family, they are related to Leptospermum and Thryptomene. Waxflower includes over 100 varieties of Geraldton wax or Chamelaucium uncinatum and other Chamelaucium species and hybrids. Some of the more common hybrids are classified as Pearlflowers, Gemflowers or Starflowers. These amazing plants typically bloom early winter through spring and are widely grown for their frilly eye-catching blooms.

Discovered in 1819, the waxflower originated from the southwest of Western Australia, where the French botanist Rene Louiche Desfontaines gave the plant its botanical name Chamelaucium. The slight waxy feel of its petals is believed to be the reason for its name. The leaves contain oil glands that have a beautiful lemony fresh fragrance when crushed. The blooms are delicate in style, flaunting five petals, ten stamens and a small, hardened fruit.

Waxflowers have long been associated with good luck and best wishes of lasting love. And it's also a symbol of wealth and riches. In Australia it's believed that the waxflower symbolizes joyful memories and new beginnings and is therefore used in most weddings. These fabulous flowers have an abundance of uses in bouquets and arrangements, as well as in flower crowns and corsages.

What comes to mind when you think of the word “Passion”? That feeling of intense creativity, or that feeling of euphoria when doing something that is truly meaningful to you. Passion is about emotions, the motivation and what makes us feel good, or just “doing what you love”.

“Passion” is all about “Romancing Hues”. Gemstone hues are reflected with Anemones, Iris, Peonies, Proteas, and Tulips certain to stir the senses in a trend story reserved for one of the great human emotions – “Passion”. This trend communicates the full range of passion-based consumer purchases to the language of flowers, and what it means when desiring saturated colors and sensuous florals. While these regal colors are nothing new, the application to mix them with more intensity, less contrast, and even greater monbotanical scale reveal a desire for more-is-more luxurious floral compositions. Influenced by idiochromatic precious gems to sartorial influences, this trend foresees bold and next-level designs in floral styling by multiplying style options from classic florals to exotic blooms. Other notable elements include vintage golds, blackened bronze, modernized urns and compotes, with rich deep green foliage statements.
