As spring rolls in with all its vibrant energy, it’s the perfect time to spotlight a true showstopper in the world of proteas: Leucospermum Flame Giant. Known for its striking beauty and bold color, this pincushion is a fantastic addition to any arrangement, lighting up the season with its fiery brilliance.

Often referred to as the Giant Orange Nodding Pincushion, this pincushion brings a burst of fiery color from March through June. Its standout feature? Those massive flower heads—5 to 6 inches wide—that create a striking visual impact. Whether it’s in the field or a centerpiece being admired up close, it never fails to turn heads.

Introduced from a seedling back in 1974, the Flame Giant was registered in South Africa under the name ‘Vlam’ in 1981. The name "Vlam" translates to “flame”, “flash,” or e“blaze” in Afrikaans, which perfectly captures the fiery essence of this incredible bloom. This beautiful cultivar was bred for its bold, eye-catching look, making it a favorite for those seeking unique and dynamic flowers.

Not only does the Flame Giant bring vibrant orange-red hues that resemble a mini fireworks display, but it’s also a fantastic addition for designers looking to add a bold touch to their spring designs. As we slowly slide into springtime, nature starts to bloom in its signature fiery hues. The transition into leucospermum or "pincushion” season is a subtle one, but it’s unmistakably beautiful.

Star-Spangled 4th of July Flowers

Beautiful centerpieces are a lot like wonderful guests. They add a festive ambiance, entice the eye, and spark interesting and inspiring conversations. With the summer’s abundance of fabulous florals, anyone can easily assemble an arrangement that's dynamic, alluring and intriguing.

Consider hosting a 4th of July gathering and set the scene with a colorful arrangement fashioned with proteas and an array of other flowers and foliage. The good old red, white and blue is a classic color combination that will never go out of style, especially if your gathering is on Independence Day. Easter Inspiration: Proteaceae

Spring is here and Easter is just days away! Out of all the holidays, Easter has the most vibrant seasonal proteas to choose from. There's just something about this stunning family of flowers that makes my heart swoon and skip a beat.

So, get ready! After filling Easter baskets and planning the ultimate egg hunt, you'll want to create a festive protea centerpiece of your own. And springtime offers the most abundant array of proteaceae like Leucospermum, Leucadendron, Banksia, Isopogon, Protea and textural Grevillea flowers + foliage. Some of my favorite designs don't require fancy containers, utilizing a galvanized bucket, wicker basket, ceramic bowl or wooden box will suffice when you have such eye-catching blooms to showcase. And you can use your centerpiece as inspiration for your table settings and other floral arrangements on display around your home.

The best part? Proteas make great ‘leftovers’ as they will last for weeks after the celebration, and many will dry beautifully... so they can be enjoyed for years. To fully round out your Easter decor, get inspired by these arrangements.

Winter Bliss

Need a little extra "oomph" during these cold, gloomy winter days? You got it. Plenty of winter proteas bloom during the year's shortest and darkest days, just when you need color the most! It’s easy to capture the beauty of the season with these fabulous florals and there’s such a surprising diversity of varieties and colors to choose from. So why not enjoy all that’s available?

Protea like Andrea, Brenda and Pink Ice are eagerly available and when mixed in an arrangement they’re sure to brighten your sacred space. Surprising foliage like Leucadendron Tricolor, Duet and Salignum can bring unexpected color and lovely texture to a design too. Plus, some varieties of Leucospermum like Sunrise start blooming in early winter and the striking orange hue adds a lovely contrast. Soft silvery-green argenteum or Silver Tree, spiky Grevillea flowers and fragrant eucalyptus Parvifolia with heart shaped leaves can transform a classic design into a cheerful wintry display.

There’s no doubt, the best way to turn the ‘Winter Blues’ into 'Winter Bliss' is to surround yourself with plenty of vivid colors and extraordinary textures. With proteas, it's easy to create a design that takes the chill out of the season and delivers a well-deserved pick-me-up.

Peach Fuzz: Pantone Color of the Year 2024

As has become an annual year-end tradition, the Pantone color of 2024 has finally been revealed. According to Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute, “In seeking a hue that echoes our innate yearning for closeness and connection, we chose a color radiant with warmth and modern elegance. A shade that resonates with compassion, offers a tactile embrace, and effortlessly bridges the youthful with the timeless.”

PANTONE 13-1023 Peach Fuzz, as it’s officially called, is described as a “velvety gentle peach tone, whose all-embracing spirit enriches mind, body, and soul.” A shade between pink and orange, this lovely hue with a vintage vibe brings belonging and inspires recalibration. It's warm and cozy, highlighting our desire for togetherness and the feeling of safety.

Sensitive but sweet and airy, Peach Fuzz is described as 'quietly sophisticated' with gentle depth and a 'contemporary ambiance' that evokes a new modernity. It's a color that creates a welcoming and comforting ambience in and around the home, whether appearing in home furnishings, floral designs or even in the garden.

Spring’s Finest: Leucospermum – Pincushions

From the vibrant yellow blooms of High Gold to the soft, golden-peach hues of Brandi dela Cruz and the bright tri-color shades (red, orange + yellow) of Erubescens, we are falling for these classic spring-Leucospermum (and many more) all over again this season.

These prolific plants deliver breathtaking living color in the fields from March through June. The textural blooms are formed mainly with long, sprout-like structures that end in a round knob called a pollen presenter. Together, the mass of styles looks a lot like pins bristling from a “pincushion”, a similarity that has given rise to the popular name for this genus.

Leucospermum includes some forty-eight species as well as several new hybrids. Unlike flowers of the genus Protea, which rely on their showy bracts for visual appeal, Leucospermum put all their art into the colors of the flowers themselves as well as the flowing shape of each curving component.

Inspired by this fanciful protea and ready to grow your own? Here are a few tips:

• Leucospermum flourish in full-sun exposure with good air movement around the plants. 
• When transplanting, set plants into the soil at the same level that they were in the container. 
• Plant on a mound or slope to promote excellent drainage in soil that is slightly acidic. 
• Mulch to conserve water but keep mulch free of the crown of the plant. 
• Water regularly until plants are established. 
• Protect from frost.

When harvested, Leucospermum are stunning when displayed in a vase on their own, or mixed with more traditional flowers like roses, tulips, ranunculus, snapdragons and more.
