Yellow advances from surrounding colors and enlarges any space. It mimics a sun-filled space, creating feelings of liveliness and good cheer.

It's pincushion season here on the farm, and we're putting the spotlight on some of the beautiful new yellow varieties being harvested. To help you distinguish between the infamous High Gold and the newer cultivars, we put together this handy chart and some close-up shots to view below.

A delightful blend of red and yellow hues, the color orange oozes with happiness. Overflowing with energy and warmth, orange is commonly associated with sun and outdoor settings. That is why tropical surroundings are often immersed in orange hues. From its playful shade to its inviting comfort, orange emits a calm yet spirited essence.

Orange is considered a fun color with scrumptious and delicious qualities. It boosts the oxygen supply to the brain and kindles mental activity. As a citrus color, orange is associated with healthy food and it fuels the appetite. If you love having friends gather around your dinner table, orange makes guests more social, encourages conversation and extends the mealtime.

In color psychology, orange is hopeful and uplifting. In fact, orange is so optimistic and uplifting, that we all should find ways to utilize small orange items such as a pen or mug in our day-to-day routines to help promote the positive effects of the shade. Orange adds spontaneity + a positive way of looking at life. Representing adventure, freedom, risk-taking and individuality, orange is uniquely its own.

Hello Yellow… Pantone has spoken! The color of the year is always a fun headline to look forward to every January. According to Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute, "The hue of yellow, called Illuminating (one of two colors selected for 2021), will help to fill people with energy, clarity and hope to conquer the continuing uncertainty, spirited and emboldening shades satisfy our quest for vitality. Illuminating is a bright and cheerful yellow sparkling with vivacity, a warming yellow shade imbued with solar power."

Yellow has historically been used to kindle joy and inspired positivity. Plus, nature is where color begins, after all... and no color is more a representative of nature than bright yellow. In the natural world, yellow is the color of sunflowers and daffodils, bananas and lemons, bees, numerous birds and many of our favorite Leucospermum and Leucadendron. In nearly every culture on earth, yellow represents sunshine, happiness, and warmth.

Looking through our collection of yellow floral creations, we have several examples where we have used yellow as the principal color in each design.

Yellow flowers and foliage can liven up any space instantly. It is, perhaps, one of the easiest ways to bring sunshine indoors and enjoy the soothing energy of nature while relaxing in your home. Yellow advances from surrounding colors and enlarges any space. It mimics a sun-filled space, creating feelings of liveliness and good cheer.

Some of my favorite yellow flowers are the Leucospermum High Gold and Leucadendron Pisa, they are bright and cheerful and mix nicely with most other colors. For this arrangement, I mixed the High Gold and Pisa with Grevillea flowers, Solanum rantonnetii, yellow genista, roses, Leucadendron Gold Strike, eucalyptus, loquat branches and even some interesting twigs from my garden.

Cinco de Mayo – A Floral Fiesta

Did you know Cinco de Mayo marks May 5, 1862, when the Mexican army won the Battle of Puebla?  The holiday has become a celebration of Mexican heritage and culture in the United States, particularly in communities with large Mexican-American populations.

The energy and sheer magic of Mexican flair is often expressed through the spirited and lively use of joyful color.  Sizzling red, orange, blue, turquoise, purple, lemon, lime and pink – these passionate colors are applied to everything and are often offset with earthly shades and whites.  Mexican celebrations are an invitation to show off colorful flowers, which are an integral part of Mexico’s culture.
