Designing with Protea Venus

Protea Venus is here to sweeten your Valentine’s Day with its radiant red blooms. This relatively new species, with its striking appearance and bold character, is quickly becoming a favorite among designers. Known for its impressive size, delicate yet strong flower bracts, and dramatic color, it brings an exotic touch to any design project. Whether you're creating a floral arrangement or styling an event, this beautiful protea offers endless creative possibilities.

Before diving into design ideas, it's important to understand what makes Venus so unique. This protea is a South African-developed hybrid that’s a mix of aristata and repens (sugarbush). Venus stands out with its rich, red bracts tipped in white, soft, red central dome and long straight stems.
 

Here are a few ways we've incorporated it into designs.

The rich red and white tones of Venus make it a popular choice for bouquets. Pair it with colorful waxflower, lush Leucadendron and textural grevillea for a romantic, high-impact bouquet.

Current Obsession: Lady Di

Lady Di. Oh La La... this stunning protea has won us over, heart and soul. Lush, colorful, and bursting with texture, this hybrid queen is a blend of Protea magnifica ‘queen’ and compacta. With a medium-to-large size bloom, Lady Di plays off more of the soft, velvety appearance of compacta and lacks the woolly beard of the magnifica. Its long floral bracts are pink, plush and tipped in delicate white fur, then shading to cream at the base while surrounding a silvery-pink central dome. Lady Di typically blooms winter through early spring.

Lady Di looks fabulous mixed with a variety of proteas or combined with an array other colorful flowers and foliage. She's regal but also fluffy and soft... the perfect winter pick-me-up. Dawn to dusk…. happy hour is infinite in blooms this luminous.

Protea Pink Duke

Spring is a long way off, but if you could use a winter pick-me-up, we have the perfect antidote. Pink Duke… a bright, cheery and vibrant protea. This lovely cultivar produces large, rose-pink blooms with a light pink central dome and white feathery tips. Pink Duke has the soft green leaves of the P. magnifica (queen) and the clear velvety, pink flower of the P. Trish Compacta.

Pink Duke blooms winter through early spring, delivering a bounty of beauty, love and joy from new years, right into Valentine’s Day.

There is no doubt that Pink Duke brings an abundance of winter cheer in the fields. But once harvested, arranged, and mixed with an array of other gorgeous florals, they are simply contagious!

Protea Pinita

Protea Pinita... here to spice up your the holiday season! This gorgeous protea hybrid is a blend of magnifica or queen + longifolia. Think LARGE bloom with a slightly waxy appearance and bracts that are flushed and tipped in a bright ‘chili-pepper pink’ then shading to light cream at the base. The central peaked dome is heavily tipped with black, providing a robust and appealing contrast.

Pinita looks fabulous mixed with other protea or combined with an array other colorful flowers and foliage. SO FESTIVE. A touch of royalty but also fluffy and soft... the perfect holiday bloom. Tip? Pinita looks stunning in any arrangement, bouquet or wreath!

In the Field: Royal Mink

Royal Mink just recently entered the Protea scene here in Rainbow and has done so in quite a regal fashion! Considered a hybrid queen, this protea is a blend of magnifica or queen and neriifolia. This majestic bloom has a medium-to-large flowering head with a velvety touch and Parisian flair… obviously accenting its neriifolia influence. The floral bracts are rose pink and fringed with white and black feathery tips, then shading to cream at the base. The central dome has a woolly black and white pattern and is heavily tipped with black, providing for a strong and interesting contrast as it is so beautifully displayed on a long, sturdy stem.

Royal Minks looks great mixed with other protea or combined with an array of other colorful flowers and foliage. Here's are just some of the lovely ways we've found her being displayed!

New on the Farm: Protea Seeds

Just in time for the spring gardening season, a collection of protea seeds are now available. Ideal for plant enthusiasts and gardeners, these protea, telopea, banksia and leucospermum seeds are prefect for those of you who have been wondering if protea will grow in your gardens. Read on to learn how to cultivate some of our favorites.

Proteas like full sun, ample wind circulation, and acidic, free-draining soil. It is best to stay out of areas where temperatures are known to remain below 28 degrees for an extended period of time.

How to Plant:

1.  Soak the seeds in water for 24 hours. 
2. Then sow in a tray of well-drained soil, decomposed granite is ideal. Adding perlite and sand to the seed compost improves drainage. 
3. Once sown, cover the seeds with about 1/4” of sand. 
4. Germination takes 3-4 weeks at around 60-70°F, and up to several months in cooler conditions. Let the germination temperature drop naturally at night. 
5. Transplant young seedlings into a container with well-drained compost being careful to avoid root disturbance. 
6. Seedlings should remain in their container for a year before planting in the garden.

In the Field: Lady Di

Lady Di blooms winter through early spring.

When harvested and mixed with other protea, there’s no doubt Lady Di is majestic!
