Leucadendron Senorita

New year, new preferences! There's no better time to switch up your Leucadendron favorites than at the start of a brand-new year. If you have been sourcing the same varieties for years (like Safari Sunset or Jester), and you want step outside of your comfort zone and experiment with something new… winter through early spring is the best time to do it. As the weather gets colder, Leucadendron seemingly ‘wake up’ and make superb winter flowers in a variety of colors and textures. With the season’s abundance of this fabulous foliage, we turn to a ‘newbie’ here on the farm.

Leucadendron Senorita… a simply stunning and mesmerizing hybrid! The flowering bracts go through a succession of color stages as they mature, from crimson blushes on a creamy hue to bright pink-burgundy tones. Masses of breathtaking blooms are displayed on very long straight stems.

And for a little history… Senorita is thought to be a combination of Leucadendron salignum and discolor. This amazing plant was developed in South Africa in the 1990’s by Gail Littlejohn, a protea pioneer, and named by a New Zealand farmer who cultivated it for the floral industry.

It’s no secret that we think Leucadendron should definitely be receiving a lot more LOVE this year… after all, switching up your favorites it a great way to boost your mood and inspire even more creativity.

Get Hooked on Fresh Spring Leucadendron

A vibrant, bunch of Leucadendron is a delightful thing: After a quick snip off the stems and a few leaves removed from the bottom, all you really need to enjoy them is a vase. Since they are so simple to arrange, it is easy to forget that they’re basically considered the foliage side of the family of Protea. To honor this genus and some 80 species (who all share the same emphasis: the beauty of their foliage), we have gathered a few of our spring favorites.

Much as we love the traditional greens… eucalyptus, grevillea, melaleuca (they're always in season!), each year we wait for spring when colorful Leucadendron come into season. After all, what could possibly be better than field fresh Leucadendron? These proteas have strong qualities in terms of their feature-game. Their exquisite colors add vibrancy to any design. Their famed longevity means they will be relished for weeks. And who can resist the colorful cones? The petals of the Leucadendron are called bracts or modified leaves, and the true flower is the cone nestled among their bracts.

For inspiration, scroll down for a glimpse this season’s favorites.

2018 SAF Outstanding Varieties Competition

The Society of American Florists (SAF) held their 134th Annual Convention in Rancho Mirage, California. It was three action packed days of educational sessions and workshops, thought-provoking breakfast sessions, the Sylvia Cup Design Competition and the Outstanding Varieties Competition featuring the best flowers, foliage and plants from farms around the world.

The Outstanding Varieties Competition has always been a great way for us to help educate wholesalers, florists, designers and other farmers about the amazing Proteas we grow, especially some of the lesser known varieties. It puts our flowers and foliage in front of the attendees so they can see them up close as well as touch and feel them. This year we had nine entries competing in three categories: Other Cut Flowers, Decorative Foliage and Flowering Potted Plant. And they were all Blue and Red Ribbon Winners… Here's how we fared:

People’s Choice & Blue Ribbon:

Protea Madiba – Other Cut Flower

Blue Ribbon:

Protea Arctic Ice – Other Cut Flower

Red Ribbon:

Leucospermum Ayoba Sun – Other Cut Flower

Protea Ivy – Other Cut Flower

Leucadendron Senorita – Decorative Foliage

Leucadendron African Tulip – Decorative Foliage

Leucadendron Phylica – Decorative Foliage

Eucalyptus Macrocarpa – Decorative Foliage

Protea King – Flowering Potted Plant
